In the story, 1984 by George Orwell it starts off by showing multiple major characters and themes in the story. Winston being the protagonist experiences negative feelings toward Big Brother which acts as a ruler and is said to always be watching in every action you make. Throughout the first part, Winston begins to write in his journal to try to get his emotions out. As Winston writes in his journal he gets more paranoid and thinks he will be punished to death. In the city of Oceana, Big Brother thinks that the society should be in which all thoughts and actions are monitored. Winston also expresses in his diary about him disliking the government's orders.
The author describes to his audience that life is unpredictable and that one can express how they feel about something. We get to see Winston's character development and how he brings the audience into his perspective on his opinions on Big Brother. Winston later on begins to question the government as well as himself.
