In the novel Frankenstein by Mary Shelly, It begins with Victor Frankenstein leaving to the University of Ingolstadt since he is a smart child who luxuriates in science. At the university, Victor seems to impress many of his peers and teachers because of his studies. As Victor creates a "monster" he abandons his creation and does not take care of it. Victor realizes that his life is in danger and is leading to a downfall. In the novel, Victor states, "The world was to me a secret which I desire to divine." Victor tells us he has been feeling curious his whole life and he was born this way. Victor tries telling us more evidence of why he was born this way by stating, " My parents were possessed by the very spirit of kindness and indulgence." It seems like Victor is blaming some of the responsibility to his parents which is led to him creating the monster. The author presents a theme of control and empowered. Winston ends up accepting the party and finds out he loves Big Brother. It represents how brainwashing is such a powerful weapon and we see this in Winston's character. Winston seems to have been brainwashed into liking Big Brother. Living in a world with spies and technology to spy on you must have damaged Winston in a horrible way. In the beginning, the author shows Winston hating the government and how it worked. The government has taught the citizens what is wrong and the trouble they would get into if they break any of the rules. Winston begins to believe that everything Big Brother is doing is good for the city and himself. At the end Winston reveals his love for a dictatorial city.

In the story 1984 there are signs of betrayal. Winston sees a man who will give up his own family members for the man not stay in Room 101. On this part you can see how the city mistreats their citizens. The author goes on to say that often times you lose hope and that is why you tend to betray people as much as your loved ones. This can be considered into today's world. Many people tend to think that just because you think you have lost everything you haven't. That is why there are people selling drugs, they think that is the only way they can make a living. All you do is hurting yourself by doing this and it is common in today's world.

As Winston goes on, he tries to stay under the radar of the thought police and Big Brother. The propaganda that the party uses goes against what Winston wants for the city and himself. Winston wants to know what is freedom and wants to live in a world where Big Brother is not a problem. Winston meets a girl named Julia to basically make an attempt to bring Big Brother to an end. We find out that Winston falls in love with Julia because he feels alive around her and how she has taken some of the party member down. As they hang out more, we are able to see that Julia and Winston bond because she outsmarts the party and Winston has a passion to see the end of the party. This gives Winston a reason to why he should not give up.
