The author presents a theme of control and empowered. Winston ends up accepting the party and finds out he loves Big Brother. It represents how brainwashing is such a powerful weapon and we see this in Winston's character. Winston seems to have been brainwashed into liking Big Brother. Living in a world with spies and technology to spy on you must have damaged Winston in a horrible way. In the beginning, the author shows Winston hating the government and how it worked. The government has taught the citizens what is wrong and the trouble they would get into if they break any of the rules. Winston begins to believe that everything Big Brother is doing is good for the city and himself. At the end Winston reveals his love for a dictatorial city.

In the story 1984  there are signs of betrayal. Winston sees a man who will give up his own family members for the man not stay in Room 101. On this part you can see how the city mistreats their citizens. The author goes on to say that often times you lose hope and that is why you tend to betray people as much as your loved ones. This can be considered into today's world. Many people tend to think that just because you think you have lost everything you haven't. That is why there are people selling drugs, they think that is the only way they can make a living. All you do is hurting yourself by doing this and it is common in today's world.

As Winston goes on, he tries to stay under the radar of the thought police and Big Brother. The propaganda that the party uses goes against what Winston wants for the city and himself. Winston wants to know what is freedom and wants to live in a world where Big Brother is not a problem. Winston meets a girl named Julia to basically make an attempt to bring Big Brother to an end. We find out that Winston falls in love with Julia because he feels alive around her and how she has taken some of the party member down. As they hang out more, we are able to see that Julia and Winston bond because she outsmarts the party and Winston has a passion to see the end of the party. This gives Winston a reason to why he should not give up.

In this story Big Brother is the "villain" throughout the book and we learn that Winston wants to put a stop to Big Brother. There are posters everywhere with the saying, "Big Brother Is Always Watching You", to try to make you respect the city and Big Brother. The purpose of the posters is also to try to make you fear and never break any of the rules. There was hope in many of the citizens that The Brotherhood wasn't just a myth and was real. The Brotherhood is an organization to put a stop in Big Brother. Winston starts to become interested in this organization and would want to become a member. He thinks The Brotherhood is the only way to find out the truth about Big Brother. The Brotherhood is has been an organization to try to weaken the party but it has been pretty tough.

Throughout 1984  Winston knows Big Brother is watching so he tries not to have any thoughts. While there are children disguised as spies there are machines such as telescreens that watch every movement you do in the household. The telescreen will also automatically alert the thought police if any suspicious activity occurs. In my opinion, I think this will do good and bad. I think it will do good because if someone tries to rob your house it will alert the police and then protect your home. I think it will do bad because it invades your privacy especially because it is on most of the time. When Winston writes in his journal and lets his mind out but is careful and dangerous because the thought police will know and he would get in trouble.

As the story goes on, Winston wants to take down Big Brother to live in a world where everyone can be free and not worry about every action you make. Winston begins to feel as he has less power because he has committed crimes that would lead him into punishments brought to the thought police. He later on starts admiring and fantasizing about dark haired woman which he seems to love. But gets very paranoid when Winston is with her. Later on, Winston finds it difficult to remember his past, which is due to the fact that the government has banned people from having any records. There are also children who are being trained as spies to help Big Brother with their surveillance. The reason why Winston thinks about being free one day is because of Big Brother.

In the story, 1984 by George Orwell it starts off by showing multiple major characters and themes in the story. Winston being the protagonist experiences negative feelings toward Big Brother which acts as a ruler and is said to always be watching in every action you make. Throughout the first part, Winston begins to write in his journal to try to get his emotions out. As Winston writes in his journal he gets more paranoid and thinks he will be punished to death. In the city of Oceana, Big Brother thinks that the society should be in which all thoughts and actions are monitored. Winston also expresses in his diary about him disliking the government's orders. The author describes to his audience that life is unpredictable and that one can express how they feel about something. We get to see Winston's character development and how he brings the audience into his perspective on his opinions on Big Brother. Winston later on begins to question the government as well as himself.
